ABE, Yasuyuki; LEE, Dong-Soo; SANO, Hikaru; AKIYAMA, Koji; YANAGIMOTO-UETA, Yoshiko; ASANO, Tomoyoshi; SUWA, Yoshinori; SUZUKI, Hiroshi; 鈴木, 宏志.
Due to the recent outbreak of avian influenza, transportation of frozen canine semen with egg yolk has been sharply restricted. Thus, there is urgent need to develop a novel egg yolk-free extender for freezing canine spermatozoa. In the present study, the effect of using skim milk/glucose (SG)-based extender without egg yolk on the motility and fertilizing capacity of canine spermatozoa frozen-thawed in the presence of glycerol was examined. There was a tendency for the proportion of motile spermatozoa exposed to SG-based extender for 3 h to be higher than that exposed for 1 h, but the difference was not significant. The motility and other viability parameters of canine spermatozoa after thawing were similar to those obtained with an egg yolk-based...

A rare retrobulbar and chiasmal meningioma in a dog Ciência Rural
Aiello,Graciane; Ripplinger,Angel; Schwab,Marcelo Luís; Ferrarin,Dênis Antonio; Rauber,Júlia da Silva; Areco,Walter Cardozo; Flores,Mariana Martins; Mazzanti,Alexandre.
ABSTRACT: A 14-year-old female Dachshund was referred to a veterinary hospital with a history and signalment of head pressing, compulsive walking, and right circling. At ophthalmologic examination, a mature cataract and absence of photomotor reflex in the right eye were observed. The neurological exam revealed multifocal encephalic signs. At necropsy, a conical solid tan mass was observed involving the right optic nerve throughout its extension to the optic chiasm. Histopathological findings confirmed a retrobulbar papillary meningioma, considered rare and seldom included as differential diagnosis in patients with neurological signs.

ABSTRACT Lymphoma is a malignant tumor characterized by cell proliferation of lymphoid origin and corresponds to 90% of all hematopoietic neoplasms of dogs. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) have been the target of many investigations in oncology due to their potential of down-regulating immune responses, as well as ensuring the maintenance of active mechanisms of tumor suppression. The aims of the present study were to compare the percentage of Tregs in peripheral blood between dogs with multicentric lymphoma and healthy animals, together with the percentage of Tregs in peripheral blood and lymph nodes of dogs with multicentric lymphoma. Twenty-six animals were enrolled in the study: 10 healthy dogs comprised the control group (CG) and 16 dogs with multicentric...

Use of organic honey for the topic treatment of a third-degree skin burn in a dog - Case Report MV&Z
Aristizabal, Andrés Sebastian; Hayashi, Ayne Murata; Matera, Julia Maria.
The use of honey provides considerable benefit in wound care as a stimulus for tissue growth, increased epithelialization, and reduced scar formation. These effects are due to its acidity, the presence of hydrogen peroxide, osmotic effect, and antioxidant content. A four-year-old canine Labrador showed an extensive wound around the left thoracoabdominal area as the result of a third-degree burn due to the use of an electrical thermal mattress. After debridement of the necrotic tissue and ten days of antibiotic therapy, the use of a topical dressing with organic honey was begun, twice a day, with pure honey applied with surgical gauze and protected with a dressing. The injury progressed with good healing, with epithelialization and formation of granulation...

Soft tissue sarcomas in dogs: does surgical resection heal? MV&Z
Castro, Patrícia Ferreira de; Campos, Andressa Gianotti; Matera, Julia Maria.
Soft tissue sarcomas (STS), a heterogeneous group of different tumors of mesenchymal origin, are described as pseudo-encapsulated masses with poor defined margins that present high rates of local recurrence compared to the low to moderate metastatic potential. They can occur both in humans and animals, and in dogs they comprise approximately 15% of all skin and subcutaneous tumors. Due to its invasive behavior, surgery is the main treatment applied for these tumors in dogs, and it can be combined to radiotherapy after the incomplete resection because the role of chemotherapy is still very poorly understood in this subject.
